Sarah:

Let me guess you've been feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or like the world has totally gone to shit? Well, have no fear, you're in the right place friend. Our mission here at Free Spirit Stitches is to create more joy in the world anyway we can. And one of those ways is with, the create more joy podcast. So join me, Sarah D your feisty, sassy, sarcastic host, as we chat about all things joy and how to create more of it in your. Because we know the world really needs it. Now I'm not gonna pretend it's always sunshine and rainbows cuz it bloody well isn't. But I do know among all those messy bits, there's lots of joy too. You're guaranteed to hear some f bombs, that's what she says and lots of tangents. But if you hang with me, I'll help you create more joy!

Hello. Hello. And welcome back to another episode of the create more joy podcast. So I'd like to set the stage for us. I'm a visual person. I like to envision what it looks like, like where are we, what are we doing? What are we wearing? So right now for this episode, I am in my office, this is one of my happy spots in the house. It has, most of my favorite things in here, lots of crafty supplies. I have a nice big old cup of coffee, um, out of my central perk ginormous coffee cup. And you guessed it. I am in smash tess. I have my black romperalls on with a black, crop top and you'll find out quick enough that nine times out of 10, this is what I'll be wearing on any given episode, any given day, any given occasion. So, um, I 11 out 10 recommend them, but anyways, this is not a smash and tess ad, however, I'd be open to, that. Hello, smash and test. If you're listening. Um, anyone knows'em send it, send it their way. Okay. before we dive into today's episode, I had, someone that listened to the first, couple podcasts, they had sent me a note, cuz they were wondering about my homework, what I got for my homework, for my joy challenge. I loved it. So I thought, why not c heck in on what my joy challenge outcome was from the last episode. So in episode, Our joy challenge was to sit and think about three things that brought us joy either in that given day or in the last 24 hours. So for me, let me just take a breath and think about the last 24 hours and what, what my answers would be. So. let's see. It was my mom's birthday. yesterday at the time of this recording yesterday was my mom's birthday. So we had a really fun full day at their house out by the pool, um, with family, my sister and her kids. So that's one of them. one of my moments was, just having a fun, fun family pool day and, and celebrating. So then after that full fun day, me and my little guy were just having some chill time, some downtime. we were both pretty tired and so we were just hanging out, um, watching some of his favorite shows in my bed. So that was really fun. And then also another spot of joy yesterday was, my little niece. I had a little bit of one-on-one time. I took her just for a little walk down the street and we were having, um, just some fun, fun, little moments. We were playing with some balloons, one burst she thought that was hilarious. So, those are my three moments of joy in the last 24 hours. I hope, um, that you enjoyed that challenge. So this episode today is it's gonna go again. It's probably what most experts would say to do. Um, but I'm gonna talk about me. I'm gonna talk about myself today. So there's gonna be a lot more I's than you's in this episode. I am here to serve you. I am here to help you, to inspire you. But I think in order for me to do that, I wanna make sure that you know who I am and that you resonate with me. So I'd rather you find that out sooner rather than later, if I'm the girl for you, if I'm the person that you wanna be spending, you know, 15 minutes a week with listening to me chat about joy and whatever else might be going on in my life. So I want this to be like, you're in the dating scene, side note, like I literally hate dating it's so stressful, like going and meeting people face to face for that first time. Ugh. So power to you if you are out there and putting yourself out there, I'm applauding you because that ain't easy. Like, like some people love it. I didn't. So I want this to be, you know, you've gone on like how many first dates and it's just like, okay. Let's just I'm, I'm totally over it. And this has probably, you know, been my, like, like literally not my 501st date, but you get the picture, like I'm over it. I'm done. I'm just showing up and I'm being like, yep, this is me. This is who I am. Let's just put it out all on the table instead of like, you know, tiptoeing around the first few dates, it's just like, this is me. love it. Or leave it. So I wanna do the same thing here with you. Um, just lay out my cards, just put it out there, who I am, who Sarah is and, and what I'm about to make sure that you resonate because I do value your time. I think it's incredibly cool that people right now are sitting or walking or driving, whatever you're doing and you're choosing to listen to me. This is the one all about me. So let's get started. I am, I'm an Aquarius engram four. I'm a generator energy type. So that's in human design. If you're into that. I love that stuff. I've just been getting into it. I had a reading last summer and there's so much into it that, you know, you kind of have to just take little bits and pieces of it, and it's very cool. So my, energy type is generator, a sacral authority. So that's kind of like the heck yeah or no freaking way. So that's kind of, I need to trust my gut and my gut reactions to know if I'm moving in the right direction. Um, and within human design, I'm also an open solar plexus, ego and crown. I know that probably sounds like total Greek and gibberish to you, but, um, in a nutshell for me, like feel having those, those three shockers open means like stuff can get really gnarly up in air. Um, but I'm here for it and, and. Diving deeper into your human design. You kind of understand what that is like. So one quick little example with an open solar plexus, um, and ego is your emotions. So like you take on the emotions of those around you as well. And so sometimes it's hard to discern, which is yours and which isn't yours. Um, and I'm like, oh my goodness. Yeah. Like that totally, totally, totally made so much sense when I was like, okay. That, that, yeah, that that's me. That's it. Um, and so I have to kind of sit and think, okay, um, I'm going to be a screen for the emotions and let them pass through me and not be a sponge and absorb them. I mean, that is really hard, especially with two small kids right now because obviously, um, emotions and big, huge emotions happen. So much, um, throughout the run of a week around here, but it's been, um, that's been really helpful. So anyways, um, that's our, that's our tangent, one of our first tangents for today, friends. So more stats about Sarah. I'm a mom of two littles. Right now they're five and eight. I'm a fur mama he's gonna be nine soon in the next few weeks. I'm a wifey, daughter, sister, ride or die best friend. I'm a crafter for life, crochet obsessed. if you follow me on Insta then, you know, that already, I'm somebody, I'll try something I'll try just about anything once. my sister made a funny remark during her speech at our wedding. She summed me up pretty good when she said that you can find me one weekend scrapbooking with, you know, a plethora of folks, um, and willing to bet, I'm definitely the youngest in the room and then the next weekend, I can be found twriling around a stripper pole, That is definitely a true story. I used to take pole lessons. They are so fun. Um, I have been thinking about getting back into them because damn like they are a workout and a half, like, and it's super fun. Like you feel totally badass, Uh, let's see. What are some of my favorite things? Favorite things. Ooh. Okay. my favorite let's see, drink that I'm digging is the Cottage Springs, raspberry lemonade, vodka drinks. They're so good. So, so good. I love right now, I'm obsessed with just lying in the hammock. I've been taking some work meetings out there too, and oh, it's, that's magical. donuts and ice cream. Yes. You say there's donuts or ice cream there. I'll be there. Let me know. I love getting my teas. I love getting my teas, um, from Tim's that's my little treat at home. I'll drink coffee right now. I'm obsessed with the, the French vanilla like creamer. That is so good. I'm definitely laid back. Pretty chill, always in comfy cozies. Hold on. I just need to take a sip on my coffee. Yeah, you're always gonna find me in my comfy cozies. I'm definitely the first one to, make fun of myself unless my husband or my best friend is around. I mean, sometimes they can beat me to the punch and they thoroughly enjoy that. But like, I'm, I'm cool with laughing at myself or making fun of myself because honestly, like life's way too serious, you know and if you can make fun of yourself, I like to think you can go somewhat far in life. I'm always trying to make a joke, probably even when I shouldn't, but like in my head, I go back to being like a 9, 10, 12 year old and I'm just like, I can't, I can't not, um, do that, but I do, I do make my therapist laugh on occasion. So I mean, I take that as a pretty good win. what else can I tell you about myself? I love to read.

Sarah:

Nicholas Sparks is one of my favorite authors. so obviously the notebook, no surprise is my favorite movie. I also love pretty woman, dirty dancing. I love like breakfast club, 16 candles, pretty and pink. I do love me some eighties teeny bopper movies. Those are totally my jam. I love coms rom coms for sure hands down my favorite type of movie I do watch the office on repeat, Schitts Creek on repeat. That's what I'm watching back now again, I love, love, love. That is such a good, wholesome, you feel so much joy like that, if you wanna feel joy and you haven't watched that yet, it is such a joyful show. So I highly recommend that. I'm a 9 0 2 1 0 gal like OG. I did like the, the reboot that they did. I don't know when that was now. I mean, it was a while ago. And then when they did the one, when they brought back the original cast, I would've continued to watch it if they kept making episodes, like I get why they didn't however, ah, Donna and David for life. Okay. I can't move on from 90210 unless I tell you this, because I know that two of my girlfriends. Hi Paula. Hi Kim. I know exactly what they're thinking right now. They've probably rolled their eyes and laughed a few times by now, j ust of the mere mention of 9 0 2 10. Because years and years and years ago, I was watching reruns nd we happened to have a girl's night, had a few drinks, and I was literally telling them a story of a plot of one of the episodes getting so emotionally vested. I was like, literally pissed about what was happening on this fake made up show. They just told me to go take a chill pill, basically but that's just, When I love something. I love it hard. So please let me know if someone else out there does the same thing. friends is always one I have on repeat, I love it. New girl, parks and rec, anyways, you get the gist. although I do love to watch some of the documentaries on Netflix too, like the murder ones. Like I said, I'm one extreme to the next there's there's so much wrapped all up inside this body.

I am a pool over like a beach person. I do enjoy being at the beach, but rather be floating in my pool. So that's where you'll find me most of the summer is in my new unicorn floatie if you're wondering, oh, I wonder what Sarah's doing. If it's a nice day, my butt's in that floaty I'm a sweet, over salty kind of gal. eating the chip with the chocolate, the little piece of chocolate is really tasty. I'm not opposed to combining them. by this point you probably have a bit of an idea of who I am, what I'm about. So the last thing I wanna talk about, I mean, If there is something you're wondering about slide to my DMS, I'd love to connect and chat about whatever it may be. So the last thing I wanna chat about before we wrap up this episode is values. In particular, I wanna chat about the values of my business, but actually I should scratch that because really these values are the same values that I have for myself, for my family and for my business, because my business is just an extension of me, I am my business. And so for me, if it's not aligned, if it doesn't feel aligned or good if I were to have separate ones, So when I first started my business, it was solely just me selling my finished crochet products. And they were just so dang fun. And every time I looked at them, I smiled when I would drop off something or someone would pick it up, they would be smiling and I would get messages of how much they loved it, how much the person they gave it to loved it. And like, literally I would light up every single time I still do it makes me giddy. knowing that I'm putting a smile on somebody's face. So joy surprise, surprise was the first value and it was literally the easiest value, because with that, what I really want to get across with joy is I wanna remind people what this crazy little thing called life is all about, right? It's about living and why the heck not be as joyful as we can be. Right. And so over the last couple of years, I've really leaned into it because when I think about it and think about spreading joy in a world that can feel really, really heavy, it it lights me the F up. Like I get so fired up and come on who doesn't want more joy in their life? I mean, even if you are feeling pretty joyful, like, are you going to say no to more of it? I can't imagine Another value that I have is connection. Sometimes I'll say connection and community. And so that quickly got added as a value because when I started my business, I had no sweet clue what I was doing. And so starting a business all by yourself, um, can be really lonely and you can feel so alone and like there's no support, but my eyes and my heart were opened so much from the amazing community that I found in my local area, especially to start off and then just online in general. social media can be total like joy suck for sure, but if you can sift through that and, and really hone in on the things that make you feel good online, you're gonna find some really kick ass, amazing people. I have found and connected with so many amazing, amazing folks, a good portion of them are local, but it is also fun that I'm connecting with people literally all over the world and we're cheering each other on we're supporting each other and like one, it, it does that not make you feel joyful right there. So hello. Um, connection and community, because even it, it, it can feel no matter what you're doing, even if you're not starting your own business, but sometimes, um, and a lot of times, probably especially like the last couple years, right, with what's been the state of the world is we're probably feeling a bit disconnected. Not probably, I know we are, we're feeling disconnected and we're feeling like we're not part of a community that we once maybe were part of because we were all forced to kind of. be on our own. Right. So, um, it's definitely like really all about community over competition over here, all about connection, because if you feel like you're part of something, if you feel like you've connected with another human being, just imagine all the goodness, all the joy that's gonna come from that. And the last value that I'm gonna talk about is wellness. when I say wellness and wellness as a value for myself, for my family, for my business is not just about our physical wellness. And while that is part of wellness for me, but wellness as a value is really so much bigger than that. And that's always something that is in the forefront because I'm continuously working on wellness, whether it be body, mind, or soul, we are all on our own wellness journey. So some of us, maybe on a movement wellness journey, some of us may be on, uh, getting more water, wellness journey, which is one that, um, I need to get back on. Oh my goodness. Sorry, side note, like send me tricks and tips on how like to remember to drink water during the day. please, I appreciate it. I feel like I've tried a lot of them, but it's just, that's a dang hard habit for me back to wellness, it's something that, um, definitely for our own self, like if we're, you know, if we have a partner, family, kids, or family or coworkers, whoever, like most of the time, I'm willing to bet we're helping them, we're encouraging them we're doing what we can to help them You know, if it's going out and having coffee with them and listening, if they're having a hard day, if it's encouraging them, You know, they want to start moving their body more, getting out for that lunchtime walk, willing to bet you're probably sending them encouraging text or voice notes or something. Right. And if you are, that's amazing. And I love that. However, I think we then tend to forget about our own wellness and that can usually get put on the back burner from for one reason or another. Right? Like we have streams and streams and streams of excuses why w e're not gonna put our wellness at the top of our list and it's not to say that in a selfish way. And I know this is totally cliche and we've heard it so many damn times, but we cannot pour from an empty cup. We cannot give what we don't have. you're probably sick of hearing that, but like, it is the legit truth. Make sure you are putting your wellness at the top of your list. If it's not number one, I mean, I'm going to say it should be start putting yourself at the top. It's probably gonna feel kind of strange, but put yourself at the top. Um, if for some reason you can't quite do that, you gotta be top three. joy, connection, and wellness that literally is the epitome of me, um, which then makes it my business. why I wanted to share them with you, they're meant to inspire you and to let you know that this is a safe space to just be you. And what somebody's value means to them could, is gonna be different for you. So you may have wellness as a value, but that means something totally different than what my wellness value means. And that's okay. That is absolutely okay. Cuz there's not one right way to do things I love having these values because they really help if I start to get overwhelmed with all the things that can come, especially with running a business and running a business by yourself, they can. They really help ground me back into, okay, how does this connect to joy, how does this connect to connection, how does this connect to wellness? Um, because those are the things and that's the vibe, that's the energy that is inside of me that I want to put out to you. And so. when I'm feeling out of alignment, then these really help me ground myself back and help me keep creating more joy in whatever way that may be.

Sarah:

The thing about joy is that we are an active participant in our joy. We cannot simply just wait for it to happen to us. We cannot just wait to feel it. We must create it. We must create it for ourselves. Spoiler alert. We are in full control. Of our joy. So my goal with each episode is to leave you with a takeaway what I'm calling a joy challenge, something that you can do to take actionable steps right now today to start creating more joy in your life. Hey friends, today your joy challenge is about values. What are your values? Whether it be for a business that you currently have, or one that is, in the back of your head that you've been wanting to start or for your family or for yourself. For a few minutes reflect, journal, if that's your thing and see what comes up. If you're stuck go and Google values or different value words, something like that. And you'll get reams of different words. go through and see what pops out. you might have 20 different words that are popping out at you. That's fine, don't think about it too much. See what just pops off the screen or the page and then go back and sit and think about them. Once you have that, write them down, physically, write them down, put them somewhere where you can see them each day, whether that be your bathroom mirror, the lock screen on your phone, your computer screen saver, are screen savers even a thing I don't know anymore. Or sticky notes, put'em all over the place wherever and however, you're going to be seeing them every day, because as you see them every day, they will become ingrained in your brain. They will become ingrained in what you do. And then when you're feeling overwhelmed or disconnected, come back to those values. Look at those values. Maybe pull out your journal pages that you journalled about um, have fun with it, right? Like don't get too serious about it. They are a serious thing, but they're also meant to be fun, inspiring, motivating, get you fired up and just excited about life. Thank you so much for listening. I hope you enjoyed that episode.
